Making a name for yourself

What do you want to be known for? How would you like others to describe you? Those are the essential questions that you need to answer – because today we all need to create a unique and niche for ourselves – in the competitive workforce.

SOME names live on, thanks to their associations. Inventors like László Biro and Linus Jr Yale saw their names become part of the English language thanks to their development of trademarked goods like the biro and the Yale lock.

Others are immortalized by having their names associated with popular dishes, like John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who is remembered by millions at lunchtime, and Dame Nellie Melba, the popular Australian opera singer who inspired chefs to create deliciously crunchy thin toasts and rich desserts. Designing and crafting ‘I’ is essential to your success. If you don’t make a name for yourself, someone will make one for you. And it might not be the one you want.

We may not be one of those whose names are etch on to dictionaries or stone, but we can definitely create a lasting impression with the people we meet every day. We can easily and effortlessly establish our credentials and credibility when we are clear of our intentions, goals and outcome in life and at work. We can now live our life authentically and purposefully. Imagine – every word, every action is totally aligned to our true self – our every thought and feelings.

This is by far, the most significant reflection you are going to make – the greatest investment you will ever make in crafting your future is to decide on:

  1. who you are,

  2. how you want to be remembered

  3. and what positive difference you want to make.
